6 August 2026, 09:52 Australia: ASX 200 Marks Fresh Closing High.
The ASX 200 rose 44 points or 0.5% to end at a new peak of 9,272 on Thursday, up for the fourth session. A surprise trade surplus in June lifted sentiment, largely due to a jump in exports. Inflows at the start of the new financial year added to the upside while a jump in June building permits was confirmed. Meanwhile, U.S. stock futures strengthened amid prospects of a U.S.-Iran peace deal that could end the five-month-long war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, gains were capped by caution ahead of July trade data in top trading partner China due Friday. Gains were widespread, led by non-energy minerals, consumer services, and consumer names. Swiss mining giant Glencore said it would seek a secondary listing in Australia, targeting admission in October. Evolution Mining jumped (3.8%), along with Northern Star Resources (3.3%) and ASX Ltd. (2.1%). Three of the four big banks rose between 0.3% and 0.9%. In contrast, Woodside Energy fell 0.2%, and Wisetech Global slipped 1.5%.
