5 August 2026, 14:18 India: Sensex Posts Marginal Gains.
India’s BSE Sensex closed about 0.2% up at 78,581 on Wednesday, following yesterday's decrease, as traders weighed the latest central bank's policy decision, developments in the Middle East and corporate earnings. Meanwhile, rising crude prices, foreign outflows and the new closing auction mechanism kept sentiment cautious. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept the benchmark repo rate unchanged at 5.25% and maintained its neutral policy stance, broadly in line with market expectations. Investors also welcomed signs of progress toward a US-Iran agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, although fresh incidents in the strategic waterway kept geopolitical risks elevated. UltraTech Cement led gains among stocks, rising 2%, with NTPC (1.8%), SBIN (1.7%) and M&M (1.7%) also advancing firmly. Bharti Airtel added 0.3% after reporting a strong June quarter.
