24 August 2026, 18:47  United Kingdom: FTSE 100 Rises on Monday.

The FTSE 100 rose 0.4% on Monday, outperforming broader European markets. Mining stocks led the gains, with Endeavour rising more than 2%, Antofagasta 1.8%, Anglo American 1% and Rio Tinto 0.5%. The sector benefited from strong metal prices and gains in SSAB following the collapse of a proposed US-Canada trade agreement that would have lowered tariffs on Canadian steel. In contrast, energy stocks weighed on the index as oil prices started the week under pressure. BP fell nearly 3%, while Shell also edged lower despite reports that its US chemicals business has attracted interest from Exxon and Apollo, with the assets potentially valued at up to $8 billion. Healthcare stocks also declined, with AstraZeneca and GSK each down around 1%. Investors remained cautious ahead of the US plan to intensify economic pressure on Iran, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expected to outline further measures later Monday.
