The FTSE 100 advanced for a second day on Tuesday, driven by strong gains in mining and energy stocks. Anglo American surged 9% after agreeing to merge with Canada’s Teck Resources. The deal will form Anglo Teck, one of the world’s top five copper producers, headquartered in Canada and listed in New York, Toronto, London, and Johannesburg. Anglo American shareholders will hold 62.4% of the combined entity, while Teck’s will own 37.6%. The companies said the merger would strengthen Canada’s role as a leader in critical minerals. Peers Glencore and Antofagasta rose 5% and 2%, respectively. Oil majors Shell and BP gained over 1% as crude prices climbed following reports of an Israeli strike in Qatar, raising Middle East conflict concerns. On the economic front, UK retail sales beat forecasts, with like-for-like sales up 2.9% in August versus 1.8% in July, exceeding expectations of 2% and boosting confidence as wages outpace inflation.
