9 September 2025, 14:24 Malta: Trade Posts Largest Deficit.
Malta’s trade deficit widened to EUR 904.0 million in July 2025 from EUR 626.3 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. This marked the largest trade recorded in history, as imports grew while exports dropped. Year-on-year, imports advanced by 12.9% to EUR 1,239.6 million, mainly attributed to higher purchase of capital goods and others (113.2%). Meanwhile, exports declined by 26.7% to EUR 335.6 million, dragged down by lower shipments of industrial supplies (-36.9%), consumer goods (-27.5%), and fuels and lubricants (-22.5%). Considering January-July, the country’s trade deficit widened to EUR 2,869.0 million from EUR 2,617.3 million in the same period a year earlier.
