Job openings in the US increased by 19,000 to 7.227 million in August 2025, from an upwardly revised 7.208 million reading in July, in line with market expectations. The number of job openings rose in health care and social assistance (+81,000), leisure and hospitality (+97,000), and retail trade (+55,000). On the other hand, openings decreased in construction (-115,000) and in the federal government (-61,000). Regionally, openings increased in the South (86,000) and the Midwest (44,000), but fell in the Northeast (-66,000) and the West (-46,000). Meanwhile, both hires and total separations were little changed at 5.1 million. Within separations, both quits (3.1 million) and layoffs and discharges (1.7 million) were little changed.
