The University of Michigan consumer sentiment for the US was revised lower to 55.1 in September 2025 from a preliminary of 55.1 and compared with 58.2 in August. This marked the second consecutive monthly decrease, pushing sentiment to its lowest level since May. The gauge for expectations was revised down to 51.7 from 51.8 and the current conditions subindex was revised lower to 60.4 from 61.2. Meanwhile, inflation expectations were revised down to 4.7% from 4.8% for the year-ahead and to 3.7% from 3.9% for the next five years. Consumer sentiment fell broadly in September across age, income, education groups, and all five index components. Exceptions: steadiness among wealthier stockholders and improved views from Democrats, while independents and Republicans declined. Concerns centered on high prices, weaker labor markets, and softer personal financial outlooks, with 44% citing price pressures.
