U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that starting 1 October 2025, a 100% tariff will be imposed on branded or patented pharmaceutical products unless the company is “building” a manufacturing plant in the U.S. Posting on Truth Social, Trump clarified that “’IS BUILDING’ will be defined as ‘breaking ground’ and/or ‘under construction,’” meaning products from plants under construction will be exempt. He wrote, “There will, therefore, be no Tariff on these Pharmaceutical Products if construction has started. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” In July, the administration had indicated plans for tariffs of up to 200% on pharmaceuticals but said companies would be given time to reshore supply chains before they take effect.
