26 September 2025, 08:39 China: EU Plans 25%-50% Tariffs on Chinese Steel Imports.
The European Commission plans to impose tariffs of 25% to 50% on Chinese steel and related products in the coming weeks, Handelsblatt reported, citing senior officials in Brussels, as quoted by Reuters. The European Commission had no immediate comment. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said earlier this month that the EU would propose a new approach to curb steel imports in order to protect domestic producers, as global overcapacity continues to pressure profit margins and hinder investment in decarbonisation within Europe’s steel industry. She added that the Commission would introduce a long-term trade instrument to replace the current steel safeguards, which cannot be extended beyond mid-2026 under global trade rules. Meanwhile, China’s steel exports are projected to reach a record high this year, rising between 4% and 9% to approximately 115 million to 120 million metric tons, according to analysts’ forecasts.
