2 September 2025, 09:52  Indonesia: Rupiah Strengthens as Prabowo Moves to Calm Protests.

The Indonesian rupiah firmed to around 16,390 per dollar after sliding to near 16,490 last week, its weakest level in a month. The rebound came after President Prabowo Subianto announced Monday that political parties agreed to cut lawmakers’ benefits to ease protests that have killed 10 people in the country's worst unrest in decades. Prabowo, who cancelled a trip to China due to the turmoil, also convened his cabinet Sunday to address the crisis. The United Nations urged an investigation into the alleged excessive use of force by authorities, as last week’s furor was fueled by anger over lavish allowances for lawmakers and what critics call extravagant policies amid budget tightening. Bank Indonesia, meanwhile, pledged to stabilize the rupiah through measures, including forex intervention. Notably, the local currency gained even as the dollar index strengthened ahead of key U.S. labor data later this week.
