10 September 2025, 06:14  China: Food Prices See Sharpest Drop Since 2021.

China’s food prices fell 4.3% year-on-year in August 2025, deepening from a 1.6% drop in the previous month and marking the seventh straight monthly decline. It was also the sharpest fall since September 2021, with broad-based decreases across categories: fresh vegetables (-15.2% vs -7.6% in July), eggs (-12.4% vs -11.2%), cooking oils (-1.5% vs -1.4%), milk (-1.6% vs -1.3%), and fresh fruit (-3.7% vs 2.8%). Simultaneously, pork prices, a key staple, dropped more sharply (-16.1% vs -9.5%), driven by abundant supply, lower production costs, subdued consumer demand, and shifting dietary habits.
