The seasonally adjusted number of total dwellings approved in Australia increased by 3.2% month-over-month to 15,212 units in May 2025, confirming preliminary estimates, and following a 4.1% drop in April. This marked the first growth in dwellings approvals since January, driven by a sharp increase in approvals for private sector dwellings excluding houses (+11.3%), and to a lesser extent permits for private sector houses (+0.5%). By region, approvals rose in Victoria (+14%), and New South Wales (+11%), while permits declined in Tasmania (-8.8%), Western Australia (-7.5%), Queensland (-6.7%), and South Australia (-6.2%). On a yearly basis, total dwellings approved increased 6.5%, easing from a 8% gain in the previous month.
