9 July 2025, 10:08 China: Food Prices Fall for 5th Month.
China’s food prices fell by 0.3% year-on-year in June 2025, marking the fifth straight monthly decline, though the pace eased slightly from a 0.4% drop in the previous month. Prices continued to fall for eggs (-7.7% vs -3.5% in May), cooking oils (-1.8% vs -1.7%), and milk (-1.1% vs -1.5%). Simultaneously, pork prices reversed course, plunging 8.5% after rising 3.1% in May, driven by growing domestic supply and weak consumer demand. At the same time, a decline in fresh vegetable prices narrowed significantly (-0.4% vs -8.3%). In contrast, inflation for fresh fruit accelerated (6.1% vs 5.5%), reflecting the effects of adverse weather and ongoing supply chain disruptions linked to U.S. tariffs.
