4 July 2025, 13:43 USA: Trump Plans Tariff Letters, Ditches Complex Deals.
President Donald Trump said Thursday he plans to send letters to countries starting Friday, July 4, informing them of the tariffs they must pay to sell goods in the U.S., bypassing the process of negotiating individual trade deals. “My inclination is to send a letter out saying what tariff they’re going to be paying,” he said, calling it “much easier.” The move comes ahead of a July 9 deadline to reimpose broad tariffs, after a 90-day pause initiated in April. Trump has since struck deals with Vietnam and the UK, and outlined a framework with China. Trump aims for a base 10% tariff, with higher rates for countries running trade deficits with the U.S. However, he ruled out extending the deadline, citing the difficulty of negotiating with over 170 countries. “How many deals can you make?” he said. Trump criticized negotiations that focus on specific goods like beef or ethanol, saying he prefers flat tariffs of 20%, 25%, or 30%, adding, “This is what you’re going to pay”.
