28 July 2025, 07:50  USA: U.S. and EU Strike Landmark Trade Deal to Avert Tariff War.

The U.S. and European Union reached a trade deal to avoid a damaging trade war, agreeing to a 15% tariff on most EU exports, including cars. Announced by President Trump and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland on Sunday, the pact was described by Trump as “the biggest of all the deals,” while von der Leyen said it would bring “stability” and “predictability.” While full details remain undisclosed, von der Leyen noted that the 15% rate would be all-inclusive, not stack on top of existing industry-specific tariffs, and would cover drugs, chips, and cars. Metals duties “will be cut and a quota system will be put in place,” she added. Trump, however, claimed the deal excludes pharmaceuticals and metals. The EU also pledged to buy $750 billion in U.S. energy, invest $600 billion in the U.S., and expand market access for U.S. goods, including military equipment. Decisions on wine and spirits remain pending.
