24 July 2025, 19:47 USA: Kansas City Fed Manufacturing Index Drops to -3 in July.
The Kansas City Fed’s Manufacturing Production Index fell to -3 in July from 5 in the previous month, signaling a contraction in factory activity. The decline was driven primarily by weaker durable goods output, despite gains in nondurable manufacturing. Other data showed mixed results: employment continued to weaken, dropping to -11 from -8, while shipments and new orders registered modest gains. Notably, order backlogs fell significantly to -30 from -11, indicating a continued weakening in demand. Industry feedback highlights ongoing challenges from tariff uncertainties, inflationary pressures, and complex tax policies that continue to weigh on growth. Looking ahead, the future composite index slipped slightly to 8 from 9, but manufacturers remain cautiously optimistic, maintaining positive expectations for production, new orders, and employment over the next six months.
