21 July 2025, 21:58 United Kingdom: FTSE 100 Hits Fresh Record High.
The FTSE 100 closed above the 9,000 mark for the first time on Monday, driven by strong gains in mining stocks. Antofagasta jumped 4.7% as copper prices rose, while gold miners Fresnillo and Endeavour advanced 3.7% and 1.4%, respectively, on bullion strength. Iron ore hit a four-month high, lifting Anglo American (3.3%), Glencore (3%), and Rio Tinto (2.5%). EasyJet gained over 1%, buoyed by optimism from Ryanair’s upbeat results. BP appointed Albert Manifold as its new chair, effective October 1, amid ongoing takeover speculation. However, losses in healthcare and defence weighed slightly, with AstraZeneca and GSK down 0.6% and 0.3%, and BAE Systems falling nearly 2%. Markets also kept a close eye on geopolitics, as EU envoys prepared for a potential no-deal scenario with US President Trump ahead of the August 1 tariff deadline, highlighting persistent transatlantic trade concerns.
