21 July 2025, 11:04 Japan: Ishiba Vows to Stay Despite Coalition's Upper House Loss.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s ruling coalition failed to secure a majority in the 248-seat upper house in Monday’s election, NHK public television reports. The Liberal Democratic Party and junior partner Komeito needed 50 seats but won just 47, with one undecided. Despite the loss, Ishiba vowed to remain in office, stating, “I will fulfill my responsibility as head of the No. 1 party and work for the country.” His weakened mandate may fuel calls to resign or realign. Voter frustration over rising prices, stagnant wages, and ballooning social security costs shaped the outcome. A right-wing populist party gained traction, driven by stricter proposals on foreign residents. External pressure also mounted: U.S. President Trump slammed Japan’s limited imports of American cars and rice, threatening a 25% tariff starting August 1. With coalition control slipping, Ishiba faces an uphill battle against a deepening political gridlock.
