14 July 2025, 08:13 Malaysia: Retail Sales Growth Accelerates to 4.9%
Retail sales in Malaysia climbed by 4.9% year-on-year in May 2025, accelerating from 4.7% growth in the previous month, which was the softest growth in 15 months. The uptick was mainly driven by faster increases in sales of other household equipment (5.6% vs 3.6% in April), other goods (5.2% vs 4.5%), automotive fuel (5.7% vs 5.6%), trade not in stores, stalls, or markets (6.7% vs 6.5%), and other household equipment (5.6% vs 3.6%). Conversely, sales growth moderated for food, beverages, and tobacco (6.4% vs 7.8%), information and communication equipment (5.3% vs 5.5%), and sales via stalls and markets (6.7% vs 8.3%). On a monthly basis, retail sales rose by 0.5% in May 2025, rebounding from a 0.3% drop in the previous month. Meanwhile, wholesale trade growth eased to 4.7% in May, down from 5.5% in April, and vehicle trade slowed to 1.2%, compared to 2.1% in the previous month.
