11 July 2025, 17:22  South Africa: Rand Weakens.

The South African rand depreciated nearly 1% to around 17.9 per USD, reaching the lowest since June 20, pressured by a stronger greenback after President Trump issued fresh tariff threats. President Trump announced a 35% tariff on Canadian goods, 50% duties on copper and Brazilian imports, and a 10% tariff on BRICS-aligned nations, all taking effect from next month. South Africa is currently negotiating a trade deal ahead of an extended August 1 deadline, aiming to avoid a 30% tariff on its exports and a 50% copper-related tariff. The country also faces a 10% penalty due to its BRICS affiliation. On the domestic front, concerns persisted over the coalition’s internal instability and the risk of stalled decision-making on key economic and fiscal issues. While the DA remains in the cabinet, its withdrawal from national talks has heightened internal friction.
