US stocks closed mostly on Thursday as investors looked past President Trump's latest tariff threats and focused on strong corporate results and record-setting gains. The S&P 500 rose nearly 0.3%, hitting a fresh record, the Dow gained 192 points, while the Nasdaq 100 lost 0.1%. Despite Trump announcing a 50% tariff on imports from Brazil and confirming similar duties on copper and other goods starting August 1, markets remained upbeat. Nvidia (0.7%) shares continued to gain after becoming the first public company to surpass a $4 trillion valuation, fueling further enthusiasm around AI-driven tech. Tesla climbed 4.7% on news of robotaxi expansion and the upcoming rollout of xAI’s Grok chatbot in its vehicles. Delta Air Lines jumped 12% after it reaffirmed its full-year earnings forecast, citing improved visibility around trade deals, while peers like United and American Airlines also rallied. Weekly jobless claims fell to 227,000, signaling a steady but cooling labor market.
