10 July 2025, 16:28  USA: Dollar Hovers Around 97.5

The dollar index was little changed around 97.5 on Thursday, with tariff headlines continuing to dominate the news. President Trump announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports and confirmed that a similar 50% tariff on copper imports will take effect on August 1. Meanwhile, minutes from the last FOMC meeting showed most policymakers still expect to cut rates this year, though views remain divided - some see a cut as soon as July, while others believe no reductions are warranted. Officials were also split on the inflationary impact of tariffs. CPI figures for June are due next week. On the economic front, initial jobless claims unexpectedly fell by 5K to 237K last week, while continuing claims rose to 1.965 million, the highest level since 2021. The data continued to point to a labor market that remains solid but is showing signs of cooling. The greenback was gaining against the euro and the sterling but weakened against the Swiss franc.
