15 March 2001, 12:33 ECB SAYS HAS NO COMMENT ON MKT TALK OF CENBANK EURO BUYING
FRANKFURT (MktNews) - The European Central Bank said Thursday
that it had no comment on market talk that European central banks were
interested in buying the euro.
ECB officials have said in the past that they would clearly
announce when the central bank is conducting foreign exchange
intervention, indicating that a no comment means they are not doing so.
The ECB must approve all foreign exchange intervention by eurozone
central banks. However, national central banks still are able to conduct
exchange market operations to manage their reserve portfolio or conduct
commercial business up to a limit set by the ECB.
Market players reported rumours that the European central banks
were buying euros at about 08:30 GMT, after the euro spiked up from
below $0.9045 to just over $0.9100.
