U.S. President Donald Trump will travel to Beijing on May 14–15 for a high-level summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the White House said Wednesday. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the “long-awaited meeting” will now take place on those dates, after being postponed due to escalating tensions linked to the U.S.–Iran conflict. The trip had originally been scheduled to begin March 31. Leavitt noted that ending the war was not a condition for rescheduling, adding that Xi understood Trump needed to remain in the U.S. during ongoing “combat operations” and agreed to the delay. The White House also said Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will host Xi and his wife in Washington later this year.
