21 January 2026, 20:58 Euro Zone: EUR Holds Near 2-Week High Amid Geopolitical Tensions.
The euro hovered around $1.17, close to its strongest level in two weeks, as investors digested remarks from US President Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos amid ongoing geopolitical strains. Trump reiterated his bid to acquire Greenland but ruled out taking the Arctic island by force. Tensions remain high, however, as the European Parliament’s trade committee indefinitely postponed a ratification vote on a US trade deal, reflecting growing unease in Europe over Trump’s ambitions. The US has threatened tariffs on several European countries unless it is allowed to purchase Greenland, straining the transatlantic alliance. On the policy front, signs of a resilient Eurozone economy and inflation near target support expectations that the European Central Bank is likely to maintain interest rates at current levels for the foreseeable future.
