13 January 2026, 00:44 Canada: TSX Sets New Record.
The S&P TSX Composite Index rose 0.8% to close at a record of 32,874 on Monday, lifted by a surge in gold miners that more than offset mixed energy names and caution around banks. Precious metal stocks led the charge with Agnico Eagle, Barrick and Wheaton Precious Metals jumping between 1.5% to 2.7% as gold soared to record highs, a direct response to reports that the US Department of Justice has subpoenaed Fed Chair Jerome Powell and revived concerns about the Fed’s independence. Energy was uneven with crude above $59 a barrel as geopolitical risks around Iran lifted prices but uncertainty over North American supply including Venezuelan barrels capped gains. Canadian banks were muted as investors awaited US bank earnings for signals on credit and cross border exposure.
