12 January 2026, 20:51 France: CAC 40 Edges Below Record High.
The CAC 40 edged lower to close at 8,359 on Monday, easing from last Friday’s record high as renewed concerns over US Federal Reserve independence weighed on sentiment. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank had received a grand jury subpoena from the Department of Justice, raising the prospect of criminal proceedings. Stellantis led the decline, falling 4.3% after abruptly scrapping its North American plug in hybrid lineup, a move that signalled weaker demand, undermining its growth and electrification strategy. Capgemini followed, sliding 4.2% after Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock to Underweight and trimmed its target price. Banking shares also retreated after Donald Trump called for a one year cap on credit card rates, with Societe Generale down 0.6%, BNP Paribas 0.3%, and Credit Agricole 0.3%. On the upside, Eurofins Scientific climbed 3.5%, followed by Saint-Gobain (+2.6%), Arcelormittal (+1.9%), Thales (+1.6%), and L’Oreal (+1.7%).
