12 January 2026, 02:21 New Zealand: Stocks Inch Lower to Begin the Week.
Equities in New Zealand edged lower in early trade on Monday, hovering around 13,689 in early and extending losses from the prior session amid weakness in utilities, consumer services, and energy minerals. Investors remained cautious ahead of key domestic releases this week, including December food inflation, November building permits, and Q4 business confidence. Focus also turned to China, New Zealand’s top trading partner, with December trade data due in the coming days, followed by credit figures and Q4 GDP. Still, losses were tempered by a strong Wall Street lead Friday, where the S&P 500 closed at a record high as investors braced for earnings season and fresh U.S. inflation data. Early decliners included Serko Ltd. (-2.4%), Tourism Holdings (-1.6%), Freightways (-1.2%), and Scales Corp. (-1.0%).
