29 December 2025, 20:48 United Kingdom: FTSE 100 Falls on Monday.
The FTSE 100 slipped 0.1% on Monday as weakness in miners and defence stocks outweighed gains elsewhere. Defence shares came under pressure amid renewed discussions about a possible peace deal for Ukraine, which raised concerns that easing geopolitical tensions could reduce future military spending and order pipelines. Babcock International fell 2.7%, BAE Systems dropped around 0.8%, and Rolls-Royce declined about 1%. Mining stocks also weighed on the index after gold, silver and copper retreated from record highs. Endeavour Mining tumbled more than 4%, while Anglo American fell over 1%, Rio Tinto slipped 0.6%, Fresnillo lost 0.4%, and Antofagasta moved lower. In contrast, healthcare stocks offered some support. AstraZeneca gained roughly 0.3% and GSK rose about 0.7%, tracking broader strength in European biotech after French drugmaker Abivax surged nearly 5% on takeover speculation and optimism around its ulcerative colitis treatment.
