22 December 2025, 18:14 Canada: TSX Surpasses the 31,900 Mark for the 1st Time.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed about 0.5% to above 31,900 on Monday, reaching a record high as gold and energy producers led gains during a holiday shortened week that has historically favored equities. Heavyweight miners including Agnico Eagle, Barrick, and Wheaton Precious Metals rose between 2.3% and 3.4% as gold prices surged past $4,400 per ounce for the first time, supported by expectations of US rate cuts and persistent safe haven demand. Energy stocks also outperformed, with Canadian Natural, Suncor, and Cenovus gaining between 1% and 1.7% as oil prices advanced after US officials reported the interception of an oil tanker in international waters off Venezuela, heightening concerns over potential supply disruptions. In corporate news, Brookfield filed for a mixed shelf offering without disclosing its size. Investors now look ahead to US GDP data due later this week.
