The FTSE 100 rose 0.6% to close at 9,897 on Friday, the highest since November 12, extending gains for the third session. The main index drew strong support from a 16.4% jump in FTSE 250-listed Carnival after it reported better-than-expected quarterly results. Precious metal miners Endeavour Mining (3.2%) and Fresnillo (2.9%) also performed solidly on the back of higher prices of gold. Other top gainers included Rolls-Royce Holdings (2.3%), Melrose Industries (2%) and Spirax Group (1.8%), with oil companies Shell (1.5%) and BP (1.4%) also advancing. On the flip side, housebuilders posted the biggest losses, led by Barratt Redrow (-2.7%), Persimmon (-2.4%) and Berkeley Group (-1.8%). Retailers, including JD Sports Fashion (-2.6%) and Marks and Spencer Group (-1.7%) tracked steep losses in US peer Nike. For the week, the index rose about 2.6%.
