The S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.8% to close at 29,869 on Thursday as investors digested a fresh slate of corporate results while tech tumbled. Cameco was among the weakest names, falling 5.2% after missing earnings expectations. Sun Life Financial tumbled 4.2% after reporting a year-on-year drop in net income and earnings. Tech also plunged, tracking US peers amid mounting doubts over stretched AI valuations, with Shopify down 4.5%, Constellation Software off 5%, Celestica down 3.2%, and CGI shedding 5.2%. Major miners Agnico Eagle, Barrick Gold and Wheaton Precious Metals lost early session momentum, trading flat to negative as gold eased ahead of Wheaton’s results due after the close.
