Building permits in Canada rose 4.5% month-on-month to C$11.7 billion in September 2025, rebounding from a 1.2% decline in August and surpassing market expectations of a 1% rise. Both residential (+4.8%) and non-residential (+4.0%) sectors contributed to the gain. Residential permits grew by C$335.3 million to C$7.3 billion, led by multi-family projects in Alberta and Quebec and single-family homes in Ontario. Non-residential permits rose by C$169.6 million to C$4.4 billion, driven by higher commercial and industrial activity, mainly in Alberta and Quebec, partly offset by lower institutional construction.
