U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping concluded talks in South Korea on Thursday, with Trump calling it an “amazing meeting” where both sides agreed on “many important points,” including trade, tariffs, and rare-earth minerals. The 90-minute summit at Busan’s Gimhae International Airport appeared to set the stage for broader dialogue, with Trump planning to visit China in April and signaling that a tentative trade deal could follow soon. Trump mentioned a 10% reduction in tariffs on China in exchange for Beijing’s cooperation in curbing the fentanyl crisis and said China would resume “large amounts” of soybean imports from the U.S. He also claimed the two reached a deal to lift Chinese restrictions on rare-earth minerals, saying, “All of the rare earth [issue] is settled… There’s no roadblock from China anymore.” Trump added that he and Xi discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine and agreed to “work together.” Chinese officials have yet to issue a statement.
