Retail sales in Canada are set to have declined by 0.7% month-on-month in September 2025, according to a preliminary estimate. This would mark the third-largest drop this year, reversing the 1% gain in August, which had been the second-strongest monthly increase of 2025. In contrast, gasoline stations and fuel vendors fell 2.0%, representing a second consecutive monthly decline. Meanwhile, core retail sales rebounded 1.1% in August after a 1.2% decline in July, supported by higher sales at general merchandise stores (+2.4%) and clothing, shoes, jewelry, and luggage retailers (+3.2%), while building materials and garden equipment sales slipped slightly (-0.3%).
