23 October 2025, 03:17 USA: U.S. Eyes Retaliatory Software Controls Amid China Trade Tensions.
The Trump administration is weighing a sweeping plan to restrict exports to China of items powered by or made with U.S. software - ranging from laptops to jet engines - in response to Beijing’s latest rare earth export curbs, according to Reuters. The proposal aligns with Donald Trump’s 10 October social media post threatening 100% tariffs on China’s U.S.-bound shipments and new controls on “any and all critical software” by 1 November. While not the only option under consideration, the move would fulfill Trump’s pledge to block “critical software” exports. Separately, Beijing has issued new questionnaires to U.S. semiconductor firms seeking details on their operations in China, focusing on pricing, income, and profit differences between U.S. and Asian markets, Bloomberg News said. While no companies are named, the survey appears aimed at major U.S. chipmakers.
