Australia’s goods imports surged 3.2% month-on-month to a record AUD 40.03 billion in August 2025, rebounding from a revised 2.4% drop in the previous month. The upturn reflected strengthening domestic demand and fading concerns over global trade disruptions linked to U.S. tariffs. Purchases of consumption goods surged 5.8% to AUD 12.68 billion, led by non-industrial transport equipment (7.1%), textiles, clothing and footwear (5.7%), food and beverages (2.9%), and other consumption goods (4.4%). Meanwhile, imports of intermediate and other merchandise goods rose 2.0% to AUD 16.03 billion, driven by parts for transport equipment (8.8%), processed industrial supplies (2.4%), and a sharp rise in primary industrial supplies (54.0%). Capital goods imports expanded 1.8% to AUD 9.93 billion, supported by primary industrial supplies (176.6%) and ADP equipment (24.0%). Meanwhile, imports of non-monetary gold grew 2.9% to AUD 1.40 billion.
