Building permits in Canada fell 1.2% to C$11.6 billion in August 2025, following a decline in residential construction intentions. The residential sector dropped C$173.8 million (-2.4%) to C$7.0 billion, as single-family permits fell C$112.3 million to C$2.5 billion and multi-family intentions decreased C$61.5 million to C$4.5 billion. Nationwide, 20,500 multi-family and 4,100 single-family dwellings were authorized, down 0.9% from July. Meanwhile, non-residential permits edged up C$34.6 million (+0.8%) to C$4.6 billion, driven by a C$211.3 million increase in institutional projects, while commercial (-C$134.0 million) and industrial (-C$42.6 million) components declined. By province, notable drops in Ontario (-C$563.3 million) and Alberta (-C$461.5 million) were offset by gains in British Columbia (+C$612.2 million) and Quebec (+C$294.2 million).
