US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he will impose a 100% tariff on semiconductor chips imported into the country. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump stated that the new tariff rate would apply to “all chips and semiconductors coming into the United States,” but would not affect companies that have committed to manufacturing in the US. “So, a 100% tariff on all chips and semiconductors coming into the United States. But if you’ve made a commitment to build (in the US), or if you’re in the process of building (in the US), as many are, there is no tariff,” Trump said. The semiconductor tariff is part of the Trump administration’s Section 232 national security investigation into chip manufacturing.
