4 August 2025, 03:47 Switzerland: Swiss Could Revise Offer on Trump Tariffs, Business Minister Says.
The Swiss government is open to revising its offer to the US in response to planned heavy tariffs, Business Minister Guy Parmelin said. The country’s cabinet will hold a special meeting on Monday to discuss next steps, with Parmelin telling broadcaster RTS that the government would act quickly - before the US tariffs are imposed on August 7, according to Reuters. President Trump has targeted Switzerland with one of the highest tariffs in his global trade reset, imposing a 39% import duty. Parmelin noted that Trump’s decision was driven by the US trade deficit with Switzerland, which reached 38.5 billion Swiss francs ($48 billion) last year. Among the options under consideration are increased purchases of US LNG and further investments by Swiss companies in the US - Switzerland’s largest export market for pharmaceuticals, watches, and machinery. Parmelin added that both he and Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter are prepared to travel to Washington to continue talks, if necessary.
