Australia’s goods imports rose 1.1% month-over-month to AUD 38.66 billion in April 2025, rebounding from a revised 2.4% decline in March, partly due to U.S. President Trump’s 90-day suspension of reciprocal tariffs. Purchases of consumption goods increased 2.8% to AUD 12.51 billion, lifted by non-industrial transport (6.6%), textiles, clothing and footwear (6.3%), and consumption goods n.e.s. (0.1%). Also, arrivals of capital goods surged 7.5% to AUD 9.35 billion, boosted by ADP equipment (25.0%), industrial transport equipment n.e.s. (11.8%), telecommunication equipment (9.7%), capital goods n.e.s (2.8%), and machinery and industrial equipment (0.9%). Further, imports of non-monetary gold jumped 22.6% to AUD 1.49 billion. In contrast, purchases of intermediate and other merchandise goods shrank 5.3% to AUD 16.18 billion, weighed by declines in fuels and lubricants (-17.2%), processed industrial supplies n.e.s (-5.8%), and parts for transport equipment (-2.2%).
