3 May 2013, 17:55  Employment in the U.S. increases

Employment in the U.S. increased by more than expected in the month of April, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Friday, with the job growth pushing the unemployment rate down to a new four-year low. The Labor Department said non-farm payroll employment increased by 165,000 jobs in April following an upwardly revised increase of 138,000 jobs in March. Economists had expected employment to increase by about 145,000 jobs compared to the addition of 88,000 jobs originally reported for the previous month. With the stronger than expected job growth, the unemployment rate edged down to 7.5 percent in April from 7.6 percent in March. The unemployment rate had been expected to come in unchanged. The unexpected decrease pulled the unemployment rate down to its lowest level since hitting 7.3 percent in December of 2008.
