New orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods rose more than expected in September as bookings for civilian aircraft surged, but fell when transportation equipment was excluded, a government report showed. The Commerce Department said durable goods orders increased 3.3 percent, the largest gain since January, after a revised 1.0 percent drop in August. Economists polled by Reuters had expected orders to increase 2.0 percent last month after a previously reported fall of 1.5 percent. Orders excluding transportation, however, unexpectedly fell 0.8 percent in September after increasing 1.9 percent the prior month. Economists had expected a 0.5 percent gain
