7 February 2008, 14:38  Germany: December, Manufacturing orders down 1.7%

German manufacturing orders fell a seasonally adjusted 1.7 pct in December from November, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Economics and Technology. Economists polled by Thomson Financial News had forecast a month-on-month drop of 0.6 pct. The ministry revised its previously announced figure for November manufacturing orders to 3.0 pct growth from 3.4 pct. In December, domestic orders fell 0.5 pct, while orders from abroad declined 2.8 pct. Large orders were exceptionally high and almost reached November volumes, the ministry said. Demand for capital goods fell 2.7 pct, while manufacturers of consumer goods reported a decrease in orders of 0.7 pct. Using a two-month comparison to account for seasonal fluctuation, adjusted manufacturing orders grew 4.0 pct in the November-December period compared with September-October. On a year-on-year basis, unadjusted December manufacturing orders grew 5.6 pct, while the consensus called for a 12 pct increase.
