4 January 2008, 17:54  U.S. Dollar Index hits 5-week low

The U.S. Dollar Index turned sharply lower, and hit a 5-week low in intraday trading, after the release of weaker-than-expected December jobs data. The index was down 0.425 points at 75.465, and is on track to post its third-straight loss, and eighth decline in nine sessions. The intraday low of 75.43 is the lowest price seen since Nov. 29. Prior to the release of the data, the dollar index was up slightly at 75.91.
