16 February 2007, 11:44  The US dollar was little changed in afternoon trading

The US dollar was little changed in afternoon trading here at the end of a generally subdued Asian session, with market participants staying cautious before the Lunar New Year holiday in many parts of Asia, dealers said. Earlier, the dollar had shown some signs of regaining ground from its levels overnight, but its bounces since yesterday's drubbing after the release of stronger-than-expected Japanese GDP data were generally shallow and lacking in momentum, dealers said. The Bank of Japan's policy board begins a policy board meeting on Tuesday and its due to announce its decision on interest rates Wednesday. UBS said in a currency market note: "With the market divided on the likelihood of a Bank of Japan rate hike, and policy makers in the blackout period ahead of the Feb 20-21 meeting, comments by government ministers and LDP politicians are in focus." DBS said in a note: "Where the financial markets are concerned, though, the ground is already primed for an imminent rate hike."
