27 November 2006, 12:23  BOJ Fukui: Should Avoid Creating Another "Bubble"

Bank of Japan Governor Toshihiko Fukui said Monday that Japan should avoid creating another bubble in the economy and asset prices. "The bubble and its bursting requires us not to repeat it again," Fukui told students at Osaka University. A lack of transparency at companies in addition to surges in land prices caused Japan's bubble economy in the late 1980s to early 1990s, he said. Fukui suggested that the BOJ should pay close attention to developments of asset prices and economic activity amid continued very low interest rates. The central bank governor also said that the Japanese economy will continue to expand unless there is a big slowdown in the global economy. Fukui didn't touch on the conduct of monetary policy.
