21 September 2006, 09:46  ECB's Weber Calls For Yuan Flexibility

European Central Bank governing council member Axel Weber said Thursday that China should give greater flexibility to its currency to reduce global imbalances, repeating a call by the G7 group of developed countries. Weber, who is also president of the Deutsche Bundesbank, said in a speech at Beijing Normal University that the stance of the G7 has always been that exchange rates should reflect economic fundamentals. It's in a country's own interests to take action that could help to unwind global imbalances, he said. Weber will meet representatives of the People's Bank of China during his visit to Beijing.
