30 June 2006, 14:31  UK: Consumer confidence index improves to -4 in June from -5 in May

Consumer confidence in the UK improved marginally in June, according to a survey from GfK and pollsters NOP. The headline index improved to -4 from -5 but was still a little worse than expected. Analysts polled by AFX News had predicted an improvement to -3. Notably, however, the sub-index measuring whether the time is tight for major purchases rose by three points to +11. This is seven points higher than the index figure recorded in June 2005. Carol Bernasconi, Divisional Director at GfK NOP said the survey suggests that consumers are feeling more buoyant than last month. "This positive change could be seen as a reflection of the nations hopes for the World Cup," she added Those polled also said that their personal financial situation had improved over the past 12 months. They were also more optimistic regarding the development of personal finances over the next year.
