The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in Germany in June dropped to 10.9 pct from 11.0 pct in May, the Labour Office said, beating expectations. Economists polled by AFX News had expected the adjusted jobless rate to remain unchanged at 11.0 pct. The number of jobless fell a seasonally-adjusted 49,000 in June from May, ahead of economists' predictions for a drop of 33,000. In west Germany, the number of jobless dropped by a seasonally adjusted 26,000 while in the east, it fell by 23,000. The announcement confirmed information AFX obtained earlier from sources. The Bundesbank said separately that the seasonally adjusted jobless figure reached 4.542 mln, down from 4.591 mln in May. "The development in the labour market in June was heartening," Labour Office chief Frank-Juergen Weise said. "Employment has returned to last year's levels, unemployment sank more than usual for June and the demand for workers remains strong," he added. On an unadjusted basis, the number of jobless fell by around 138,000 to 4.397 mln from 4.535 mln in May, according to the Labour Office. Compared with June last year, the number of unadjusted jobless dropped by 383,000. The unadjusted jobless rate was down at 10.5 pct from 10.8 pct in May, the office added.
